Bear Valley Idaho

Distance from SouthFork: ~45 minutes by vehicle or side-by-side

Tucked deep into the Boise National Forest, Bear Valley is a wide-open alpine meadow known for its wildlife viewing, fly fishing, and rich history. Once used by Native American tribes and early trappers, it’s now a haven for sandhill cranes, elk herds, moose, and the occasional black bear. In spring and early summer, wildflowers blanket the valley floor. Bring binoculars, a box lunch from The Fork, and get ready to unplug. Side-by-sides or snowmobiles make this remote spot more accessible year-round.

Kirkham Hot Springs

Distance: ~5 minutes from SouthFork Lodge

Just down the road from the lodge, Kirkham is one of the most popular natural hot springs in Idaho—and for good reason. Steaming pools cascade down the rocks beside the river, making it the perfect place to soak under the stars or warm up on a cool morning. It’s easy to access, family-friendly, and a must-see stop, especially in the winter months when snow piles up around the steamy water.

Pilot Peak Lookout

Distance: ~60–75 minutes by vehicle or side-by-side

Towering above the surrounding forest, Pilot Peak offers some of the most dramatic panoramic views in the region. At over 8,000 feet, the old fire lookout once served as a watchpoint for smokejumpers and rangers. Today, it's a bucket-list ride for side-by-side explorers and a scenic reward for adventurous hikers. On clear days, you can spot the Sawtooths and beyond. Pack extra layers—it gets chilly even in summer.

Payette River (South Fork)

This wild and scenic river is the heart of your SouthFork experience. Fed by alpine snowmelt, it’s world-renowned for its Class III-IV whitewater, pristine fishing holes, and dramatic canyons. Whether you’re rafting, kayaking, fishing, or just sitting on a boulder with your feet in the water, the South Fork offers constant connection to nature. Keep an eye out for river otters, osprey, and even bald eagles soaring overhead.

Grandjean

Distance: ~1 hour via side-by-side or 4x4

Nestled along the edge of the Sawtooth Wilderness, Grandjean is a quiet, rugged outpost where the trailheads begin and the road ends. In the winter, it’s a snowmobiling paradise. In the summer, it's a launchpad for some of the best hiking in central Idaho. There’s history here, too—Grandjean was once a stagecoach stop and gateway for early explorers of the high country. Plan a day trip with lunch packed from The Fork, or ride up to catch a sunset on the peaks.

Beaver Creek Summit

Distance: ~30 minutes from SouthFork Lodge

This lesser-known scenic stop sits high on the route between Lowman and Stanley and is one of the best places to spot mountain goats, elk, and deer—especially at dawn and dusk. It’s also a great place to stretch your legs, take in the alpine air, and snap a few photos. During the snow season, it becomes a waystation for snowmobilers, offering panoramic views and deep powder trails.
